In 1864, Eliza Sinclair, a widow recently emigrated from New Zealand, bought the Island from Kamehameha V. Ownership remains in the hands of her descendants.
Leis are not made of flowers on this arid Island - but from white pupu shells gathered from the beaches. These beautiful objects of art are valuable.
Nihauu Islanders have no electricity, cars, roads, hotels or restaurants, and most live in the village of Puuwai.Until recently Ni'ihau was off-limits to outsiders.
Hawaii's Leeward Islands are NW of Niihau.
